Why are spreads so high at market open?

Hey guys, I never really understood why the market opens with such high spreads. I just got taken out of winning trades even though my SL was far from price and there wasn’t even a gap up and no news.
The market is open but there’s low liquidity in the markets since the Sydney session doesn’t kick off for another 35 minutes (6pm EST) thus leading to high spreads.
